Pet Policies & Their Owners

We are not pet owners, we had been in the past but choose not to be in this lifestyle. We are not pet haters, we just get annoyed by pet owners who do not take full responsibility for their pets. It’s not an easy job but remember you chose to have a pet, so you need to follow through with your responsibility.

Why is it that people will get upset with us when we bring it to their attention that they are not taking responsibility for their pet? It seems lately that the irresponsibility is getting worse and many pet owners act as if they don’t have to adhere to the rules or better yet to use common sense when no rules are enforced.

We watched one man allow his pet to poo, then walked away. I asked him who did he think would pick up after his pet and he replied that the rain will wash away the tiny bit that his little dog left behind. The next day we stepped in a little poo from his little dog long before the rain was able to wash it away. Not acceptable behavior.

Another incident, we watched a lady walk her pet on other sites and watched him pee on there satellite dish, their sewer hose and a few squirts on other items on others sites. Then when she approached our site I stuck my head out and asked very nicely if she would kindly keep her pet off of our site and away from peeing on our things. She gave me a mad look and said that her pooch would not do that, I explained I just witnessed it and she huffed and went over to the manager who was standing in back of the office. She pointed and waved her arms but nothing ever came from it since the manager just walked away.

Another time we stopped by another’s site and started talking with them and the pet next door that was tied up outside and apparently not a happy camper began barking excessively. So much in fact that we had to leave because we couldn’t hear one another. As we walked past the pet owner who finally came out, she replied that her little yapper was just trying to get into our conversation, she thought it was funny and we did not.

This following pet policy is the best we have ever seen and the good news was at this park they adhered to it. We have been to way too many parks lately that either do not have a policy or if they do have one, they do not follow through on it.

Pet Policy - We love pets, but some folks give their pets a bad reputation! Pets should be kept on a leash at all times. Please use the pet walk and don’t allow your pet on other campsites. Owners are responsible for what their pet leaves behind! Please clean up after your pet. We reserve the right to exclude pets if complaints are received. Pets are not allowed in any building or in rental trailers.

This sort of policy is more like common sense and unfortunately some owners do not use much of it which leaves a bad reputation for all owners. That may not be fair but we have decided to speak up using a nice tone and not confrontational. After all we do not have any pets and should not be subjected to others who do not have responsible owners.

It doesn't matter if you are a pet owner or not. The behaviors you describe are despicable! They would bother me also, and I think Emma is a pet (although she may think I am:))

I am in total agreement with you, Kimberly. As pets get treated more and more like humans, people seem to be getting more lax about following the pet rules.

I agree with you. Nothing is more unkind than a pet owner that could care less and spoils a nice time for everyone. Too bad we can't "bag" these careless pet owners. ;c)

I have two dogs and I love them to pieces. But we are "blue-baggers" and always carry bags with us. There is no excuse for not picking up after your pet or for allowing it to be intrusive on others' property...dogs can be taught it is NOT OKAY to 'mark' everything they walk past. We would be very sad without our old dogs but realize not everyone feels the way we do.

Glad you spoke up, I'm with you all the way. I've had many pets both large (horses and burros) and small (chickens, cats, dogs) but choose to be as responsibility free as I can at this stage in my life. Looks like the folks you encounter sure don't live up to their responsibilities as pet owners. I'm with Paul...let's bag them. Will they fit in a 50 gallon? :-)

Applause, applause!
My little Bella's poos are tiny but I ALWAYS pick them up. Some people just have no respect! Maybe if we all speak up more this behavior would be less prominent!

We're dog lovers and we're with you on that! And we say the same things about people's human kids too...get those brats under control and put 'em on a leash! ;)

I totally agree with you! Common sense pet responsibility would eliminate a lot of problems. In fact a good does of common sense is badly needed by a lot of people in our modern society today.

You are completely correct. Until we picked up our guest dog, we chose not to have one while traveling and were always appalled at how some people have no sense of responsibility. I guess they feel that they are above the rules that apply to everyone else. It is the same attitude I see by smokers who feel it is their right to leave cigarette butts wherever they are done with them.

TOtally agree with you. We have a wee dog, we pick up promptly, even way out in the desert, and only allow 'watering' on our own site. I go crazy when the cat walkers allow that mess all over, like cats are somehow different. Good post.

So glad you posted on this subject! I couldn't even tell you how many times I have had to open my RV door and ask a pet owner to please get off of our site. Sure dogs have to go somewhere, but that somewhere should not be where our children play and where we lounge! Someone not picking up the poo is one thing (which is just plain rude), but allowing the darn dog to poo on an occupied site is another. Even if you pick it up there is always some remnants left behind. We have also been victims to dogs pissing on our personal belongings (the nerve!). Truck/trailer tires, sewer hose, electrical cord, chairs and kids toys. It's beyond disgusting and these types of pet owners should be ashamed of themselves. And even more unbelievable is the owners that allow this to happen and you are literally standing RIGHT THERE! And when I do speak up then "I'm" the bad guy? :$ So many times I've wanted to set my two boys loose to go piss and poo on these peoples lots just to see the reaction. What's the difference?
There isn't much that gets me going but this just happens to be one of those topics that do!
Great post. Thanks for bringing this to the irresponsible pet owners attention. ;)

Hm, reminds me of a time when one of my former associates went to his neighbours and peed on their front door. (I'm not kidding) When questioned, he said, "Well, you seem to think nothing of letting your dog piss on my truck, so I thought maybe that was some sort of neighbourhood tradition? Thanks for sharing".
Never happened again. Of course, didn't hurt that this was a guy weighing in around 260. Not too much of which was fat, either.
Personally I have no qualms about pitching dog poo back over my neighbours fence. Also seems to be effective in getting a message across.

I love my girl Gingee and I would not want anyone to think badly of her so I take care that we offend people in the ways that you've mentioned. Leaving dog poo laying around is a shitty thing to do! (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
