Mad River Rapids RV Park

3501 Janes Road
Arcata, CA  95521
800-822-7776
8/29/2013

We paid $46.37 using our Good Sam 10% discount for a level concrete slab with water, electric and sewer site.  They offered free WiFi and Cable TV but our Verizon MiFi had all bars and we did not watch TV.

The hosts were very accommodating and friendly and the grounds were well maintained and there were several beautiful garden areas.

The laundry and restrooms were clean and updated.

They have several signs regarding picking up after your pet and it looked as if that was reinforced but we did notice several dogs off their leashes and being allowed to roam.  This was being done by several of the long term renters at the park, so we assumed it was allowed and we were not pleased with that since one of the dogs was a big one.

With all of this said, there is nothing that really stands out as very special and we were shocked by the rate.  For this reason alone we would not recommend this place and would not return if we are ever in the area again.  We would most certainly find another park that does not charge so much for so little.

Fiesta Grill & Cantina

3525 Janes Road
Arcata, CA  95521
707-822-4600
8/29/2013

We walked a few feet from the Mad River Rapids RV Park where we were staying to enjoy some Mexican food and we were very pleased.

We both shared the chips and sauces our server brought to us.  The red sauce was hot…a bit too hot but the other sauce was tasty with just a hint of heat.  The chips were hard and thick and were very fresh.

Our drinks were fabulous.  Jerry had the Blueberry one and I had the Raspberry Margarita.  Both had lots of tequila, plenty of fruit taste and lusciously frozen to perfection.

Jerry had the huge Burrito and the taste was filled with enough heat but not overwhelming.

I had the Combination Platter #3 which included Chicken Enchilada, Beef Taco and Chili Rellenos and each was better than the last.  The spicy but not overwhelming sauce with the beans enhanced each of the flavors and made it a great meal.

The service was not over the top but the server was there when needed.

If you are ever in the area, we would recommend having a good Mexican meal here and their drinks are pretty good too!

Travel Days & More Change of Plans

We put on over 1,000 miles since our last posting and it most certainly caught up with us especially because we dry camped for several of those days and something went wrong with our generator which made for no coffee in the morning.

NOT a good start, but thank goodness we only had a few feet to travel to hook up.  When we pulled into Coos Bay, Oregon ready to hookup for a few days at The Mill Casino RV Park we were unaware of the several clubs that were checking in on Monday of all days and they were booked.  Our only choice was to get on a waiting list and in the meantime dry camp in their parking area which we did before heading to the Casino for lunch and some play time.

Within a few hours we received a message that they could accommodate us on Tuesday for one night which we immediately confirmed that we would take it.  We dry camped for the night and the next morning when we hooked up our generator for coffee, it just would not continue to run.  So at 9:30am we walked over to the office hoping to get in early, and lo and behold our site was empty and they had fresh free coffee… we hit the jackpot!

Making reservations has never been the way we like to travel, we feel if we were meant to be there then somehow it would happen, if not then we make other arrangements.  In the 10 years we have been full time traveling this is only the second time this happened so we figure our odds are good.

Well our odds went way down even more the next few days.

It seemed everywhere we showed up they were full, so I began calling ahead to where we thought we were going to stay and explore and unbelievably they were all booked.  Now what?  Of course, change our plans again and again and finally again!

This was not even the holiday weekend yet and we were having some major issues getting into parks.  We are not willing to change our ways about making reservations so we began calling other areas to see which places we would not need reservations.

We could not get our generator to work so we were having a hard time dry camping so we went with Plan B or by this time it may be C or D or even Z by now.  Anyway with the holiday upon us and needing to be in Chula Vista by the 16th we decided to head south once again but since we had already turned inland it was hot, so very hot and getting hotter so we once again changed our plans and headed towards the coast but still plan to head south but taking a different route and stopping at different places along the way.

We were in Grants Pass, Oregon when we needed some cooler temps so instead of continuing south on I-5 into more heat we opted to take US Route 199 south to Crescent City, California out of the heat and back on the coast.

We continued on once we hit the coast since it was drizzling and no hope of us taking our bikes for a ride around.  We stopped at Cher-AeHeights Casino in Trinidad, California and the views were spectacular.  They allowed dry camping but of course we were only going to do so in an emergency since we still have not fixed our generator, so we stayed for a few hours playing and hitting jackpots.

We left and headed south to Arcata, California where we hooked up at Mad River Rapids RV Park for the night.  Check out our separate review for this park.

It was late by the time we arrived so since the Fiesta Grill & Cantina was located within feet of the park we decided to have some Mexican food and to say it was good is such an understatement.  Read our entire separate review on our dining experience.

Jacks Landing RV Resort

247 NE Morgan Lane
Grants Pass, OR  97528
866-RV-JACKS (785-2257)
8/28/2013

We paid $31.68 using our Good Sam 10% discount for long and wide level site with water, electric and sewer.  They offered free cable and WiFi but our Verizon MiFi worked fabulous and we have not turned on TV in quite a long time.

It was conveniently located right off I-5 which meant lots of traffic noise but otherwise it was a quiet park.  We love it when they put a park right in the middle of everything but the time you’re there you feel as if you are away from it all.

The sites and the outside areas were all kept up nicely.

The restroom and laundry room were clean and updated.

If we are ever passing through this area we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

Seven Feathers RV Resort & Casino

325 Quintioosa Blvd
Canyonville, OR  97417
877-839-3599
8/25-8/28/2013

Wow…WOw…WOW!!!  What more can we say?

We paid $32.40 using our Good Sam 10% discount and the additional 2nd discount with their playing card for a long level concrete pad with a picnic table, water, electric and sewer site.  They offered free WiFi, cable and shuttle service, not just to the casino but the shuttle will take you shopping, to restaurants, and just about anywhere in town you want to go.  Our Verizon MiFi and phone had perfect reception all the time and we had no problem finding our DirecTV signal.

This resort has it all and they know exactly what great customer service is all about, they treat each of their guests as if we were all millionaires without charging us as if we were.

The common areas and landscaping were well manicured.

The restrooms and laundry area were kept immaculately clean.

The pool and spa are indoor and they were absolutely welcoming.

Not only would we return, we highly recommend it to everyone.  This is definitely one of those resorts that we wish all others would follow suit and hold themselves to this highest standard.  It is definitely rated amongst the top 10 of our choices in all the years we have been traveling.

11/9/2010 & 8/24/2013

Note 2013:  Rates are about the same, a few improvements and still the same wonderful customer service.

With our Good Sam 10% discount, we paid $63.66 for 2 nights for a FHU back-in with cable and WiFi. A bit pricey for our taste but it was right across the road from the Chinook Winds Casino Resort and they offered some really good deals.

The grounds were well maintained and the new management was very accommodating. The shower area was really nice and kept very clean.

The laundry facilities was a small room but useful, the washers took $1 and the dryers were 75 cents and worked marvelously.

Even though you couldn’t see the ocean from the park, you could hear the waves crashing, especially at night while we were sleeping. We highly recommend this place for an overnight visit, even though it is on the higher price side.

They provided free shuttle service to and from the casino, be sure to check out our blog for the separate review on the casino, lots and lots of freebies. They advised that reservations be made but during off season as it was there was no problem getting into a site for as long as we would have wanted to stay.

The Mill Casino RV Park

2665 Tremont Avenue
North Bend, OR 97459
800-953-4800
 11/5/2010 & 8/22/13

2013 Update:  We paid $28.85 for the same site as we stayed in a few years ago, that is $10 increase.  Everything else is the same.

By signing up for a Players Card, you will receive a 15% discount. We paid $18.19 per night for a FHU Back-in including cable, WiFi and free 24 hour shuttle service to the casino. The sites were paved, level and able to accommodate big rigs with enough room for your tow vehicle.

Very modern and well maintained restrooms/showers and laundry facilities. They offered free coffee all day in the office, and provide an assortment of goodies you may have forgotten to pack in the store.

Every person affiliated with the casino we came in contact with was very gracious and willing to go above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. If we are ever in the area again, we would definitely stay here and highly recommend it to everyone.
